“We’ve done this a million times.”
And most of the time, nothing happens.
Until one day… it does.
That’s the dangerous thing about complacency. It doesn’t usually show up loudly. It creeps in quietly through routine, familiarity, shortcuts, distractions, overconfidence, and the belief that because something hasn’t gone wrong before, it won’t go wrong today.
But safety incidents do not care about experience levels, job titles, intelligence, or good intentions.
Sometimes it only takes one moment.
One skipped step.
One distraction.
One assumption.
One shortcut.
And everything changes forever.
My Story Changed My Perspective on Safety Forever
Years ago, my life changed instantly in a catastrophic boating accident that could have been prevented. It wasn’t caused by evil intent. It wasn’t because someone woke up wanting tragedy to happen.
It was a combination of mistakes, missed awareness, and circumstances that escalated in seconds.
And like many workplace accidents, the people involved likely never imagined something devastating could happen that day.
That’s why when I speak at safety conferences, corporate safety events, plant shutdowns, and Safety Week keynotes, my goal is never to point fingers or place blame.
My goal is perspective.
Because after experiencing firsthand how quickly life can change, I understand something many people never truly think about:
Every safety policy has a face attached to it.
